Our Garden – Starting the Seeds

I’ve been dreaming all winter of all the wonderful things we would grow in our garden this year. Each year we add just a little bit more in our tiny urban backyard. The kids have been excited too, and it’s a fantastic learning experience for them.

The past few weeks, my little ones have been learning the valuable lesson of patience as well as refining their fine motor skills as we embark on the first step of our gardening journey: starting the seeds.

We started by first making mini greenhouses from old egg cartons. I love the plastic egg cartons from the Eggland’s Best Organic Eggs. Unfortunately, we did have quite enough, so I had to get a couple more from a friend.

Once I made the greenhouses, it was time for the kids to start adding the dirt.

They were so patient and helpful! I didn’t get any pictures of them planting the tomato seeds because I was so busy handing them each individual seed. But they each planted their seeds in a little hole and covered them oh so gently.

Now time to water the seeds.

Finally, we placed our tomatoes in our sunny window next the our pepper plants from a few weeks ago.

Okay, so it wasn’t that sunny out :) The cartons don’t latch, so we hold the lids down with a little ribbon. Once they sprout, we will count the plants each morning and watch them grow!
